Littera was founded in 1996, and its objectives, as defined in its statutes, are structured around two integrated areas: research and intervention. Its objectives are therefore:

a. To promote education in reading and writing in all domains;

b. To promote research into all dimensions of reading and writing;

c. To promote professional development in the design and implementation of reading and writing programmes;

d. To raise awareness of the impact of reading and writing skills on all individuals by continuously encouraging the development of such habits;

e. To promote higher levels of literacy among all individuals, without distinction of culture, race, creed, or sex;

f. To encourage and facilitate cooperation between individuals and institutions engaged in research, teaching, and the promotion of reading and writing;

g. To engage with the responsible institutions, raising their awareness of the problems identified in the field of literacy.

In 1997, Littera was accepted as an affiliate of the International Reading Association (now the International Literacy Association) and, as such, became represented on its European Committee (IDEC). In October 2008, it became one of the founding members of the Federation of European Literacy Associations (FELA), the organisation responsible for organising the European Conferences on Literacy. Littera was responsible for organising the 16th conference, held in 2009.
