In January 1995, the International Reading Association, now the International Literacy Association, through its European Committee, challenged some Portuguese academics to create an association whose objective would be reading and literacy in general, and which would share the same principles and objectives as the vast array of associations promoting reading and literacy existing in Europe.
On February 16, 1996, the statutes were approved and the Association was formally created. Soon after, it became part of the European Committee of the International Reading Association, currently consolidated as the European Federation of Literacy Associations (FELA).

Throughout these 30 years, there have been numerous local and national initiatives for the study and promotion of reading and writing. As early as March 8, 1997, during the 1st General Assembly of Members, an international colloquium was held, with the participation of researchers from two similar European associations: the United Kingdom Literacy Association - UKLA, represented by Professor Greg Brooks (who recently passed away), and the Asociación Española de Lecto-Escritura - AELE, represented by Professor Jose Quintanal Dias.

In 2007, LITTERA was awarded the European Literacy Promotion Prize to the "Giving Life to Letters" Project, a project of the Intermunicipal Community of Vale do Minho that supported and applied to FELA.
In 2009, we organized the 16th European Conference on Literacy and the 1st Ibero-American Forum on Literacies, which brought together researchers and professionals from all continents. At this event, Littera had the opportunity to honor Kenneth Goodman, an unavoidable name in reading theory.
